A Long Path

It started from a place I know

Where the nights don't end

It was as any other day

Until I took that first step

Not alone though,

Lost in a sea of faces

I marched forth in crisp morning

Until the road did end

Like a serpent

We slid into the trees

And blazing sun,

And found our path

The sound of feet,

And of inquiry only

Heard among the sway

Of leaf and limb

The occasional battle cry

Rings forth

With a character

Unfamiliar even to me

We are tried

And pressed for time,

And supplies

But dark faces

I thought I didn't trust

Give surprising aid

In a rose coloured way and,

For a moment

I believe

As I am drenched

With a comforting cool

That sends me to the end

Of a long path

where I greet the night

With as many travelers

As my thoughts unfolding,

And find in its wake

That I walked

Through this pain

For my sake.
