You Drown It, I Carry It

My heart breaks every time I see another bottle

A whisper of the life we have become

Can’t live without you, can’t live with you

I clear the glass and wait on another outcome.

Will any of this heal, or only scar?

A message in the dark, barely drawn

I make myself smaller, softer, easier to hold.

I don’t know how long I can keep holding on.

I’m so afraid I’ll never be enough,

A ghost of the girl I was when we were young

I fear I’ll lose you before we’ve even had a chance

To reach the stars on which our dreams were hung.

Same hurt, different ways of handling the pain

A knife pressed slowly into the heart

You call it coping, I call it staying.

So lost in this, I do my best not to fall apart.

You drown it, I carry it.

A breath of despair I try to hold in

I set the bottles where I will not see them

And feel the breaking start beneath my skin.

I love you on the nights you cannot stand,

A dark I cannot seem to push back to the light –

I still believe there might be better days

I just don’t know if I’ll survive the fight

Hope is a small thing, sitting in the corner.

A flickering flame teetering on the edge of going out

Holding both the hurt and the hope for tomorrow

Some nights I cup my hands around it and try to protect it

Some nights I wait, and let the drought decide.

I don’t know the ending to our story.

A sky we promised we would reach, still so far away

I love you in the dark I cannot fix – the hurt cuts deep but I’m still here.

I’m still looking up, holding on to the hope of a new day.

sometimes loving someone

sometimes loving someone means letting them go. sad but true.
