Drones

Sit friend, I'll tell you a story.

That doesn't begin "Once Upon a time."

A tale too full of shadow and sorrow

For any child's book of lies.

Shattered dreams lie just beneath

The most glorious shades of grey.

And a fellow's heart is too cold to break.

On wintry mourning days

Nothing, friend, none too much at all.

Just envy and jealousy,

And enough regret for a few hundred years.

So we leave a man, tired, broken.

A wizened ogre twisted and bitter.

His hands are gnarled and frail.

They're never know joy; no warmth at all.

We walk, friend, drones

Fed synthetic emotions,

And all the apathetic children

Feel nothing much at all.

And here bitter disappointment thrives

Thieves, and paupers and princes...

They all come to a compromise.

"You scratch my back, and I'll rape your wife."

So fall in line, drone.

A drum sets a course

A path to follow.

And, friend, we so easily forget

The gnarled hands,

Without caress, beneath all care.

Contemptuous fellow.

The very husk,

of what we all fear.

An interesting poem I particularly like the phrase,
"You scratch my back and I'll rape your wife" basically because that's the true picture of the world today, it is indeed a dark and troublesome place to be. And having been raped myself I see that perhaps a little clearer than most.
No matter how we paint pretty pictures to our children in fairytales they all grow up to see the truth of how society is a dog eat dog reality that we all get caught up in, and many dreams get shattered. You have expressed this truth very well here. Thank you.
