Alex Hershaft, Survivor Of The Warsaw Ghetto
Dr Hershaft was
9 years old when his Warsaw ghetto was bombed
by the Nazis. In the previous year 300,000 had been
taken from the ghetto to Treblinka to be killed.. His father
had arranged for his mother's and his safety and was later killed.
Alex Hershaft said Ezra Klein's position on
reform rather than abolition of animal agriculture is akin
to a pre Civil War antiabolitionist advocating better
working conditions for slaves.
After Alex came to the US by himself as a teen, he
receied a doctorate in chemistry in Ames iowa. As a result of
his work he visited a slaughterhouse (called by an Ohio Dept of Health
official a 'disassembly' plant) and in 1961 became a egetarian after seeing
the piles of hooves, heads and other body parts on the floor. He later
became a vegan. Since 1975 he has been an animal rights and vegan
activist, initiating several international coalitions.
He has spoken of the comparison between the holoaust of European Jews
and that of trillions of animals.
He is as of this writing 87. Before covid he was dancing once a week.
Now he swims daily.
