1

XUE SHEN AND HONGBO ZHAO

2 heavenly swans
alight on the lake
that they might glide
as swans
to the music of Swan Lake
.. they flow more perfectly
than the Tao
.. as their skill
sparks chills
and causes tears to fall
in the people of the West
... and more rare..
in the eyes of Chinese

2

IRISH IRIS

Because he was a magnificent
actor he was called upon
to play the role of
a villain in a play..
but who could
ever disguise
the awesome goodness
in his eyes

those Irish irises
.. so small
those Irish irises
which contain the all

(to S. Gleason)

3

RACHMANINOFF AND MALININA

Tatiana Malinina
soars on earth
and in air
.. on and off
on and off
to the Godly music
of Rachmaninoff

4

VERONICA'S CLOVER VEIL

Veronica and clover veils..
do violet the vale
neath skies cloudclad
or when the
ultraviolet sun prevails

5

ROTTEN APPLE

Any rotten apple's
core-freed seeds
can clothe the earth in
orchards apple-treed.

Of honey bees it is the creed
that the sweetest dew
lies in hearts of
the most rejected weeds.

6

APPLESAUCE 2

Spherical firm apples
are sold as is.
Bruised misshapen
apples more quickly
become applesauce.
Wave smashed water
more quickly becomes mist.
The imperfect
are sometimes
more quickly liberated.

7

SMOKERISE TRINITY

The steam from
the cup of berry tea
spirals around
the incense smokeplume..
they entwine the smokerise of
the charcoal campfire
while from the woods
uprise the wings of a wren

9

FLITTING THRUSH

Have you ever seen a saffron field
full of bright orange stars
a tiger lily meadow blush
strewn with dottings of paintbrush
a fruited tree studded with
a flock of flitting thrush

(to Nancy L whose father gave
each of his children a flower..
hers was the tiger lily)

0

IRIS PARCHMENT

As always of old
the iris bud unfolds
her gilded parchment
of background gold

but the eye's iris
will unroll
the endless scroll
of her own soul
past where sea
foals
past the shoals
past dry land's
attempts to control

10

DAWN GREETING

Dusk clouds setting
the sun did firesinge
gold fingered glowing
with adoring tinge
and then he slid away
but brought out his final rays
..
a light filled syringe
squirted last cloud with
a rosy fringe
and then he was gone
or so we thought
until he dripped through
morning's gate hinge

11

A HEART FULLBLOWN

A rose fullblown
is the opentoall heart
.. fragrance flows from it
.. the perfume of love

12

WINTER PALATE

Dawn instantly paints
all the earth gold
Snow brushes the world
with amnesty's white
and Thoughts
of Love
bathe the globe
in rosepink light

13

TIME THE MIRACLE MAKER

The ugly duckling has
grown to swan

The worm's
purple wings
were by Love drawn

Night's spawn
has birthed
the dawn

Sleeping Beauty is
awakened
by the King's pawn

14

JASMINE SCENT

The South Wind
for the evening
has donned
jasmine scent

15

BLOOM AND BUTTERFLY

The bloom and butterfly
ask not which is
clad in more beautiful
clothes

.. ones shining wings
the others pastels....
how beautiful when she
arose
from the petals of the rose

16

BEAUTY MAGNET

As many chipped away
in building ladders,
Ganesha on a high hill
looking oer the thousands
on the plains below..
unfurled his infinite trunk
and selected her of the
most beautiful heart..
for that was what
drew his magnet

..wound his trunk around
her waist..
and lifted
her up to the plateau
of grace

(to Jan)

17

GIFT OF BEAUTY

She did not want
in that life that
beauty be bequeathed

..

she did not want
the wrapping
to be more beautiful
than the gift..

nor the unwanted lust
of men following her

as if she were
a dog in heat..
nor the jealousy of women

to bar her from their

hearts.... nor
to see her body as

any more than the glove
of Spirit

but she found the test
too strong

18

FIR TREE IN THE SUN

Branches of the fir
tree still covered in
snow..

but melting in the sun

.. are both snowlace shawl

and jeweled rhinestones

.. yet it is the melting

drops

which in the sun glow

19

BEJEWEL WITH DEW

With her 8 thimbles

on hands so nimble

she weaves through

the night

... but not til

dawn is her web

bejeweled with dew

.. shining with

the sun

20

MISS MOSS

Miss Moss
.. has been busy
for many years
painting many rocks
jade.. some tree trunks
iridescent green
... water is always
on her brush

She works
from dawn's blush
to soft evening's hush
ever helped by
angels'

wingrush

21

AARON SHIKLER

Do angels sit on the head of a pin?
Some souls of those whom Aaron paints..
sit on the point of his brush..
others hover round the room

.. in their portraits..
the eyes.. are the gates

22

BEAUTY

a beautiful child
is sometimes pedophiled
a fancy car
does thieves attract
the loveliest blooms
are sometimes plucked
beauty is by self rejecters attacked

23

INSPIRATION'S OARS AND LIME DRIPS

The oars of inspiration
dip gently into the lake of memory
stirring up the past..
while a semi-lime rains
gently into a cup of berry tea

24

TIDEPOOL EYES

Tidepool eyes do fill
with what Spirit does oerspill

25

COLOR FRAMED IN WHITE

Anne Lindbergh says
beauty is framed in space...
as curators frame
rainbows and coats of
many colors in white.

26

BEAUTY BEYOND ACTION

Like the bees to the bloom
drawn only by unseen perfume
To her heart are all hearts drawn
and witness they her rising dawn.
Dwelling forever in Tiger's Eye
she needs take no worldly action.
All her prayers Godfulfilled
by the power of Love's attraction.
What is her beauty's secret spring?
Holiness.. Wholeness
beyond fraction.
What is her charisma's source?
Loving all she brooks no faction.

(to M Felver)

27

WEST WIND IS COMING TO THE BALL

The West Wind
is coming to the ball
with jeweled rhinestone
raindrops in her wavy
hair..
scented by rose, peony, lilac
and jasmine

28

RIBBON'S BOW

Those who too much love the ribbon's
bow..
may not untie the box of power

29

WINGS OF TEAL

Sweet cockatiel
.. with wings of teal
.. when she flies
merges her blue
with the aqua sky's hue

30

LIPSTICKED CORPSE, RED DYED HOT DOG

The morgue beautician's
task was to paint lipstick
on corpses.
The meat processor's
job was to inject
red dye no.2
into corpses..
(in some cases
while he was
still alive..
still corpus)
that hot dogs look
red, not brown

31

FRAGRANCE FREQUENTS

Fragrance
visits fresh fruit frequently.

and crosssection of lime
held to the light
is translucent with sun's
glowing
frequencies.

32

CORNFIELD FRAMED

A gold green cornfield
in white Queen Anne's lace
framed..
a cornfield into which
no harvester put his
heavy killing tread

33

MOON SLIVERS

Through the sky
the moon sails
Through the sea
she reflected slides
but through the
tree branch sieves
and through
cloud sleeves
she comes on
silver slippers
... leaving
behind her
footprints of
silver slivers

34

BEAUTY'S TRUNK

As many chipped away
in ladder building
Ganesha on a high hill
looking oer the thousands
on the plains below..
unfurled his infinite trunk
and selected Jan of the
most beautiful heart..
for that was what
drew his magnet
..wound his trunk around
her waist.. and lifted
her up to the plateau
of grace

35

GREEN UNIFORMS.. AND SPIES

Those leaves in olive green uniform
felt more vulnerable than the
individually clad blossoms
but it was the blooms..
in their plain clothes..
who were classified as spies
and nearly their heads cut off

36

SAGARADHAR: GOD HOLDS THE SEA

Rocking Cradle
of the World
Sunset Stairway to
the Stars
Only by Great Masters
Trod
Only Written on by GOD

37

SMOKERISE TRINITY

The smoke of frankincense
earth transcends.
On the charcoal campfire
below its smokerise
the steam from
the pot of berry tea
upcurls.
These 3 streams entwine into trinity....
while from the windswept willowwoods
upwings a wren

38

NAVY BLUE EPAULETS

We saw deep navy blue light
from her aura..
rest on her shoulders like
epaulets.. her medals
were unseen..
and the more precious

OPRAH

Oh Oprah God did make her
a perfect size eight
as God in the past had
clothed her in weight
Sometimes only those
with extra pounds ringed
can squeeze through the hearts of the suffering

39

MONOCHROME PEACE

all the blue..
of sky and sea
spreads their peace
spreads their peace
all the whitewashed homes
in the isles of Greece
spreads their peace
spreads their peace
and the bluemorninggloried
rooftops of Mexico
attract the bees
without surcease
without surcease

(* my mother
described the exhilaration of coming down a mountain in Mexico
seeing every roof covered in blue morning glories)

40

FLITTING THRUSH

Have you ever seen a saffron field
  full of bright orange stars
a tiger lily meadow blush
  strewn with dottings of paintbrush
a fruited tree studded with
a flock of flitting thrush

(to Nancy L whose father gave
each of his children a flower..
hers was the tiger lily)

41

IRIS PARCHMENT

As always of old
the iris bud unfolds
her gilded parchment
of background gold

but the eye's iris
will unroll
the endless scroll
of her own soul
past where sea

past dry land's

that the sweetest dew

44

TWINKLING AND TRICKLING

.. Touching our fingers
the stream that trickles
.. Wanding our eyes
the stars that twinkle
.. Touching our mouth
mangodrops tingle
.. Touching our ears
windchimes tinkle

..
all the senses..
the gateways to God

45

SEPARATION OR ONENESS

Many want beauty
vernal
to be eternal
... preferring
separate form
to Oneness
with the Infinite

46

NOT PETITE

the oak tree mourned
that she could no
longer wear
the tiny pot
in which she
as a sapling grew
..
until she saw
the oak tree
next to her

47

WINTER RYE

The wind is waving
the winter rye
.. its gold glows
neath charcoal grey sky

48

SOULCATCHER

From Joan Baez, Dick Gregory
and Lawrence Ferlinghetti
to the swirls and whirls
which furl in spaghetti
through his camera
he is a soulcatcher

(to Chris Felver)

49

CLOISTERED CLUSTERS

"What ostentation"
said the puritan mowed lawn
of the sunlight's orchestration
of his neighbor's orchid nations.
"How vulgar" echoed
another..
re the cloistered cluster
of violets' shy lustre.
"Garish trollopes" resounded
a shaded wallflower not dancing
like the sunflowers with the sun.

The white rose of Uganda has the same aroma

Beautiful the scent of the tobacco flower

God who painted living oysters' shells with crushed pink pearl
wants them left alone

It is the Lord's leela, He who lets

Footnote: Robert Frost was at a dinner party on a porch. Someone asked him
about the lovely sunset. He replied 'I never discuss business
after dinner.' He said that delight at a thought caused him to pick up
his pen (paraphrased) .
