Problems With Beekeeping

A British rabbi wrote 3 reasons not to eat honey.

First, he said, the wings of the queen bee are often

clipped so that she can not move the hive away from

the kidnapping beekeeper.  Second, the bees are often

crushed as the racks are slid in and out. Third, some

beekeepers don't want to lose money all winter allowing

the bees to eat the fruit of their own labor, the honey. And so

the entire hive is destroyed and a new hive bought in the spring.

Those practices are overshadowed by a more serious wone, a worldwide

shortage of bees, caused by deforestation, cropdusters,

lawnmowers and harvesters, apiphobic (beefearing) individuals

fearing stings who wipe out whole hives, people stepping on

them in dandelions as they walk through grass etc.

There is a British program called No Mow May, asking people

to keep a part of their yards uncut to foster wildflowers for

the bees. A city in Wisconsin and others have adoped the

program.  Bees are absolutely essential in the pollination of

fruit trees. In addition they have an intrinsic right to exist

because they have life.
