The Sandbar

The water will get deeper, rest assured,

Testing the grip of my once steady hand.

Sure, up to now our union has endured,

But what of when our feet don’t reach the sand?

All my life I have gone against the tide,

Faced the waves looming on the horizon,

But I’ve done it knowing you’re by my side

To lift me up as I grow and wizen.

I see the sandbar now silhouetted,

Our fingers mercifully still intertwined,

And imagine a moment regretted

When I lose your hand and you fall behind.

I can reach it in time to greet the sun,

But without you there what will I have won?
