In This Cruel World

One day you encounter a kindred heart,

Simpatico souls arranged in tandem,

And you find yourself called to take part

In a story the jaded call random.

It didn't take long before we bonded,

Comparing our triumphs as well as pains.

We took in each other and responded,

And in that union great promise remains.

The evil rise up, clouds of dust and dirt,

Conspiring in their lairs to displace us,

Making it their business to inflict hurt.

If there's a god above they disgrace us.

In times like these we must stick together,

A meeting of minds their hands can't prevent.

We're on the same team, birds of a feather.

We can soar above all walls they invent.

Time rushes by, we can't find another.

I'm sorry to say we're precious and few,

So it's best we look out for each other.

Here in this cruel world it's what we must do.

I think of my purpose, these things I do,

And hear you in the music to my verse.

I can't forget how I reflect on you,

How the notes and words were made to converse.

Little motivation is needed here.

I turn around, see the look on your face

And the need to soldier on blazes clear –

That's a frown I'm determined to erase.

Should your sadness pave way for any doubt

I'll prove to you I've only just begun.

This darkness you deserve to do without,

And my light will show you we two are one.

They'll never conquer what we've created.

Where we meet is a safe and sacred place.

They will never find where it's located,

And a love built for you fills up its space.

Time rushes by, we can't find another.

I'm sorry to say we're precious and few,

So it's best we look out for each other.

Here in this cruel world it's what we must do.
