Polaroid

Polaroid

A now fading Polaroid
of Catherine,
aged seven,
as I will always remember her
in jelly shoes
pink hotpants
and muppet “Animal” Tee
all peach skin and freckles
and that oh so troublesome mane
of wind whipped blond hair
stooped, head on one side
cheekily smiling at my precious birthday camera,
which she dared not touch,
selects a pebble on the beach at Moelfre
with old red gold labrador…our Felix

I have other photos of course and memories
mental flashes
snapshots
triggered by: clinical smells,
plastic tubing,
any mention of leukaemia
and all the waters of the world
can never wash away
the so salt tang of that beach
in my eyes.
