Sunscreen

I stood in the sun today and closed my eyes.

I drifted back while enjoying the warmth and
found myself stretched out in a lawn chair next to yours.

I looked over at you and smiled.

Your skin glistened with a radiance
and your nail polish was chipped
and unashamed.

We faced our lawn chairs towards the highway
to watch the cars racing out of town towards Racine.

We talked about things I can no longer
remember but for some reason the laughter remains.

Long gone, you took that blue
sky with you continuing on as did I,
and now all the years
that have fallen between
us have turned their heads
and lowered their eyes.
