Affirmative Action

Folder:
Blackness

Things have been unfair in this country

ever since it has been established

especially for my ancestors who were

brought here on slave ships

this land was not meant for my father nor for I

it was meant for the master to enjoy

that all Amerikan apple pie

you say Lincoln freed the slaves

for my people and for me

well I'm not deceived he did it

to help this country's economy

Lincoln didn't do me any favors

I am still a nigger in your grandfather's eyes

and he'd probably still lynch me from a tree to die

when we were so-called freed, still branded by our skin

we tried to get into the work force

but you wouldn't let us in

so we started organizations like the NAACP

so we could have the pleasure of someday

having an office seat

it still took years before we obtained

our civil rights

and we still weren't excepted simply because

we weren't white

sure we had a few of us in those office seats

but it was not enough to compete

companies hired just enough blacks

and called us tokens

and those blacks did not dare be outspoken

they were afraid of losing their job or

their position

they knew they could be replaced without question

so our organizations worked a little harder

and got affirmative action

to abolish the unwritten rules of this country's

racist faction

I hear you complain because you think we get jobs

because of our color

but I never hear you complain about how my people

have suffered

I feel this shit. As a black person, I know how it is to work so hard and never get the proper recognition simply because of the color of your skin. Here it is 2003, and nothing much has changed.
