INT- UNIVERSE KARAOKE BAR – NIGHT

TITLE: UNIVERSE KARAOKE BAR.  Sunday, August 27, 2000, 10:07pm

JOHN and JEFF follow EVETTE into the bar.

EVETTE makes a beeline toward the DJ booth.

EVETTE turns her head back to JOHN and JEFF as she walks ahead.

EVETTE

You gotta put your name in right away or you won’t get to sing.

JOHN and JEFF scurry over to a booth in the back and JOHN opens a huge spiral-bound book full of karaoke songs.

JEFF

John, can you even sing?

JOHN

No.

JEFF

Me either, hopefully Evette knows what she’s doing.

EVETTE arrives back at the booth and sits next to JEFF.

EVETTE

What are you guys gonna sing?

JEFF

I haven’t decided yet.

JOHN shrugs his shoulders.

EVETTE

Well I’m thinking something from ‘Grease.’

JEFF

‘Hopelessly Devoted to You?’

JOHN

‘Greased Lightning?’

EVETTE

No silly, I put in for a duet; ‘Summer Lovin’.’

JEFF

Actually, it’s called ‘Summer Nights.’

EVETTE

(batting her eyes)

Well in the karaoke book it’s called ‘Summer Lovin’’, Don’t you prefer the name ‘Summer Lovin’’, Jeff?

JEFF

And just who are you going to sing this duet with?

JOHN

Not me.  Nuh-uh.  Nope.  I want to sing something else.

EVETTE puts her arm on JEFF’S shoulder.

EVETTE

I was hoping to sing it with my date Picasso here.

JEFF (V.O.)

(beaming)

She said, ‘her date’!  And she called me Picasso again.  Wow!  Life was a grainy black and white Kansas before she said it but now things are a vivid Technicolor Oz!

EVETTE scoots out of the booth.

EVETTE

I’ll be right back.

EVETTE leaves the table.

JOHN

Cool!  I don’t owe you the twenty bucks now!

JEFF

Hey, I paid for the movie, which means you still owe me eight!

JOHN pages through the spiral songbook.

JOHN

I wonder if they have Freebird?

BOOTH to STAGE

JOHN scribbles something on a couple pieces of paper, walks to the DJ booth and hands them to DJ ST. PATRICK.

ON STAGE

An ASIAN SINGER and a MIDDLE EASTERN SINGER are attempting a horrendous rendition of the duet ‘Ebony and Ivory.’
