All the Best Poets Sit in the Smoking Section:28

EXT – PANCAKE HUT – NIGHT

A large BABY BLUE VAN pulls into the Pancake Hut lot.  Painted on the side, in big cursive silver and gold lettering, are the words Sugar’s Babes.

Godsmack’s ‘Voodoo’ begins playing.

DENNY, the driver BILLY, and the dancers NATASHA, LACEY and MONIQUE all get out of the van.

BILLY lights up his cigarette as they walk toward the restaurant.

NATASHA

Just go in there and say ‘take this job and shove it’.

DENNY

But I’m their boss, I can’t tell my employees that!

MONIQUE is petting DENNY’S shoulder.

MONIQUE

You had fun tonight, didn’t you Denny?

NATASHA

(giggling)

Denny, that’s funny!  Your name is Denny but you work at Pancake Hut.  Is the manager of Denny’s named Pancake?

BILLY wheezes a laugh at NATASHA’S joke; everyone else is silent.

DENNY turns to BILLY as they reach the door.

DENNY

You better put out that cigarette Billy.

DENNY, BILLY, NATASHA, LACEY and MONIQUE file into the entryway.

SARAH, menus in hand, walks up to them and sees BILLY’S cigarette.

SARAH

(to BILLY)

You can’t smoke in here anymore.

BILLY throws his cigarette to the ground in the entryway as the smoke spirals upward.

SARAH (CONT’D)

How many?

SARAH spots DENNY and seems surprised.

SARAH (CONT’D)

Oh my god, Denny, is that you?

DENNY speaks to SARAH in a condescending, half-joking/

half-serious way:

DENNY

Yeah, get back to work!

LACEY

Five— for smoking.

DENNY

(to LACEY)

The fucking city council won’t allow smoking anymore—just in places that have the lottery.

LACEY

(clenching her teeth)

Why don’t you get the lottery in here then?

SARAH leads them towards table sixteen

JOHN and JEFF immediately look up, and notice THE ENTOURAGE passing.

JEFF

That’s her!  That’s the chick from the strip club!

JEFF nudges JOHN, this time!

JOHN

See, I told ya they’d come to breakfast with us!

THE ENTOURAGE nonchalantly files past without acknowledging either one of JOHN or JEFF’S stares and settle in at table twenty-three.

EVETTE notices JEFF’S slack jaw.

EVETTE

Hmm, some singers from your karaoke bar?
