"Doors Are Closed'

by Jeph Johnson

I looked at her
and said to my wintertime love:

"Hello,
I  love you.

You make me real
and light my fire...

We could be so good together."

her favorite song was
"People are Strange"
this must have been
why she found me
so intriguing
during those
strange days

My wild love
touched me
and I loved her madly
while cars hissed by her window
on their moonlight drive
it seemed
an easy ride
on love street
with this wild child,

but now the doors are closed
and the music's over
I sit stoned immaculate
with the world on fire
hoping to
break on through
in the end

I called her at
five to one
and asked the changeling
"Who scared you?
Why did you do it?"

"To come of age?"
I tell all the people
I must take it as it comes

I've been down so long

and I can't see her face
the unhappy girl
walked out
my door
three months ago

"You're lost little girl"
became my lament
while waiting for the sun

Wishful?
Sinful?

Do I damn her
or instead wish
her favorite song was
"Love Me Two Times"?
