"Memory's Glow"

by Jeph Johnson

A spark morose lit her cigarette.
Time nearly froze as their eyes met,
Inhaling the smoke with only one breath
Alienated more of her recollection
Of lovers before who'd left her dejected.
Memory's glow was quelled in the ashes
And even though he lacked in compassion
His demeanor and tone was like turning the station
Of her TV at home when it's lost fascination.
His eyes roamed the aura of our fair maiden
Not condoned, yet informal, unaware of his fate
And she hid her flame low, yet shined radiantly
Hiding memory's glow and tried to pretend
They didn't attach, and she wouldn't regret
His advance was a match for her cigarette.
