"I Saw Myself, December"

by Jeph Johnson

...sometimes the twelve
days of Christmas start
on Friday the thirteenth...

along the ground
wind-blown dead
stepping
branches down.
swirling
barren
blanket snow
I saw myself,
December
through the living
room
window.
the face
in my reflection;
a frown
downcast morose
despite a warm hearth
blazing red
still shivering
still inside
tearing through
gifts green and
red-ribbon
relations
opening up
gathered together
and I don't even believe in god
why am I looking outside?
through the shadow
in the window
they see me stare
and continue
christmas unaware
