"Owed to Joy"

by Jeph Johnson

For those less passionate this won't pertain,
If you've never ventured there is nothing gained.
When she smiled I could not complain
And for two whole years happiness reigned;
But joy like this can't be sustained.
Confusion coursed through my veins
That night I became her ball and chain.
Now the love in my broken heart has waned,
Apathetic thoughts have been ingrained
In every dark corner of my brain.
Looking back with the motive to explain
Our picture book portrait's indelibly stained;
Tinted red with the color of pain.
Dull grey rainbows mount their campaign
Flying overhead with the jet planes
Maneuvering through this hurricane.
To think my feelings were not germane
To her decision to leave she claimed,
So my thoughtfulness was all in vain
These fractured emotions hold back the refrain
Unrequited love means love abstained
And human couplings seem inhumane
No longer sacred, they become profane;
Right is wrong and reason insane!
Suicide's something you entertain
And thoughts of death must be restrained.
When former friends must be detained,
They roll their eyes with such disdain
Yet none of them are truly ordained
To make mention of what this pertains
It's none of their business, it's my domain
To frantically cry out these rhymes inane
Forever and ever if I could attain
More words than the English language contains.
