Rosebud Friendship

Rosebud Friendship

T'was a scarlet night where Olive Oil
was reading a fiction novel
and minding her own business
when in walked Pop-Eye
popping open his can of spinach
to pour into his mouth.

Thinking he was all that and a bag of chips
he tried to show off for her with his muscles,
but his mouth wasn't so subtle with a
tender caress of nectar tones and compliments.

Olive Oil wasn't impressed, but offended.
She wanted more than a man with muscles.
Back to reading she went.

Along came Pete who thought he could impress
her with his money and tried to send her gifts
of cars, flowers, candies, cards, jewelry,
but he couldn't do simple things like
hold a conversation, open a door, help her out,
nor could he be affectionate.

Olive Oil wasn't a superficial kind of woman.
She wanted someone who truly cared for her.
To the Post Office she went and a "Return To Sender" labels were used.

Pop-Eye didn't understand what her hang up was.
He tried to win her over by protecting her from Pete.
Olive Oil softened to him a little, but started a friendship with him.

Upon taking the time to understand her
emotions, interests, desires, listening, and showing sincerity
verses only wanting a trophy girlfriend/date
she began to unfold like a rosebud in full bloom
nd the dance of true friendship began to sing
with it's bittersweet melody
for there was no telling what shall be...

Author's Notes/Comments:

Here's my spin on Pop-Eye-The-Sailor-Man, Olive Oil, and Pete. The underlying message is: if a man truly wants to win a woman over, be sincere with your actions and words. Show her you care for her as a friend and realize that even if it doesn't go further than friendship; it's not a waste of time...for friendship is a blessing to be cherished.
