Shadows

I sat alone in the dead of night, without a sound in the room. There was hardly any light, only several dark shadows of a chair, a table, and myself cast by the dim glow of the moon. I gazed into my shadow for a long period of time, seeing myself in a sort of primordial form. This was only an outline, a small semblance of a creature who has lived a life, felt complete sadness, as well as complete joy. A creature who has accomplished so little, yet in my narrow view of this life, so much. The shadow was a border, having a small amount to do with what I perceive as “me”.

Nonetheless, the shadow means more than I could have come to understand without this night of solitude. The shadow, with it’s humble yet unyielding presence in our lives, is there to remind us of our true size compared to the world that holds us, the galaxy that holds our world, and furthermore the universe that holds everything the entire history of our kind has come to understand. Everything has a shadow. Although shadows can show what is here now, it is in our shadows that we also see death.

The shadow cast ahead is our destiny, and as we pass it’s end, the shadow cast behind is our legacy. Our shadows can live many years strong and true, long and far, but eventually our shadows will all begin to fade. Once they begin to fade, they are all but lost, and there is no hope for them to retain there greatness. Structures build by ancient men, with strong shadows, have been withered nearly to dust in the ages that have come to past. The shadows we see of ourselves shall pass, and new men with new shadows shall come.

We ask where we go when our death has come? We do not go anywhere, but our shadows go to the sky. Thousands of generations of men’s shadows make up the dark, lifeless expanse that we see in the night sky. Monuments, homes, everything we have seen or created, is within this darkness. The night sky is a gathering of shadows, cast by the light of undying stars. This is there to remind us of that which has long past.. and that at one point.. we will all be a part of this grand shadow, a shadow in a long and enduring history, one that will repeat itself, as all others do.
