THE BODY POLITIC (EARTH DAY)

JOURNAL # 41

Earth Day
this very day
way back in 1970
in all her staggering lament
a country on a mission
to save the planet
starting here at home
with marchers
some 20 million strong
while the rest of the world
languished on in their toils
of societal discontent
America regulated her factories
scrubbed her shores , her skies
and oceans
passing legislation through a broad scope
with the likes of the clean air act
more and more the government and her
people build upon old models that show
they work
corporations climb on board from the
largest steel mills to the mom and pop
businesses that began in their garage out back
the mindset ever remains the primary key
through the eyes of ones children
each the world's inhabitants must see
preservation, conservation, innovation
all brothers in prosperity
without the rest of the countries soon
themselves fully on board
the world will fail catastrophically..............

Author's Notes/Comments:

I watched a very detailed documentary about the events that lead up to the very first Earth Day back in 1970 on this date. I was moved to learn so much about how we as Americans use to view our environment and how quickly through a series of individuals who rose gradually up through the ranks of public awareness to become spear heads to this problem with all the pollution America was fast getting enveloped up in. This poem was born of that information I was so broadly and extensively given.
