STORY BOOK LESSONS

JOURNAL #39

whether by sword or song
life is ever eclipsed
by the love for which
we long
distant effigies
sketch the real stories
Brutus ever doomed
for sacrificing Caesar
Cleopatra that Queen whore
with too many lovers and grooms
allowed her love of power
to doom her to political ruin
Mr. Darcy, with his cold cold
outer demeanor painted so arrogantly black
his heart ached in the ripeness of love's
unexpected bloom
forcing him to fight through his own
ideas and beliefs of life's station
verses personal happiness
Little Dorrit tiny obscure quiet and
poor creature that she was
so fearful, sweet and demure
bound by the predispositions of
a selfish overly judgmental
closed rank society
stepped upon and set aside
until that kind gentlemanly benefactor
Arthur Clennan arrived
a friendly ear himself
fallen as he had
on hard financial and family times
business devoured
honest mistakes made out
to be a crime
she befriended him gladly
when he was near friendless
and he saw the beauty
that lay behind the little, kind
gray mouse
so many of life's hardships and truths
trotted out on the pages as fiction and
history
laying to bear
much needed life lessons
via the pages of full bodied fiction
with antagonist and pro antagonist
verses the historical venue
molded for the reader on some
gloriously grand and fiery scale
lessons lived and lessons learned
either in truth
half truth
of actual fact
or spun into a dizzying
mesmerizing tale
that leaves the reader
happier for having read
stories that taught
even as the heart
they injured a little more
and made an example of how
the goodness in us all
can somehow prevail
and be restored.......................

Author's Notes/Comments:

was inspired by how stories we have read as children over the years and adults along with history lessons we were taught in school how those things can teach so many important life lessons and this poem came to evolve from my thinking about all of that.
