COURAGE REMEMBERED ( THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF ELIZABETH EDWARDS)

JOURNAL #39

fierce gentled tigress woman
you slipped away from us
on this lovely, cold afternoon
leaving such senseless jungle
of apes and ape watchers
gaping in tearful stunned silence
your character out weighed
the baggage of your
unfair circumstances
a much more jaded nation today
stands with its head bowed
quietly remembering
your strength and determination
but best of all
the rock steady tower of self
that represented the
fiery grace
you displayed in
your glorious battle to stay alive
as long as possible
and it is that very grace that
you quietly chose to take with you
today of all days
as you escaped the wrecked vehicle
that carried you through 61 years of
carefully lived life
a pearl if you will
returning to the truest harbor
for any soul to rejoin
such an appropriate day you
selected
may your courage always
carry you over.....................

Author's Notes/Comments:

written shortly after learning of the sudden death of Elizabeth Edwards in the late morning of Dec 7, 2010 the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I knew she was ill with breast cancer but after watching the Nate Burkis show ( September) she seemed so upbeat and hopeful and that made me feel she had a few more years yet likely so hearing of her death so soon really threw me for an emotional loop. I just kept thinking of her two youngest children and that 61 was a year shy of early retirement even. I am sure she is in a far better place now and of course is with her so beloved son she lost when he was a mere 16 so that gives some comfort to know that. This poem helped me to deal with the sadness I felt from hearing of her sudden passing. My heart and prayers go out to her family but most especially her three remaining children. God's speed to you Elizabeth!
