A TALL DARK ELM ( A TRIBUTE TO LANGSTON HUGHES)

Folder:
JOURNAL #34

an unforgettable poet

with a weary world visited 's view

his words preceded him to be

book lover that he was

he told of triumphs

he rhymed of tragedies

and the world came to sit

at his doorstep to see

to languish in his eloquence

of mismatched memories

standing along side

his young man's dreams

through troubles past

the country could appreciate

nearly take on

his personal tone

and recognize wrong as wrong

wherever it was sewn

in the thirties there was no

black and white even

there was just white

black had no place

and any place that

black did have

was small and demeaned

and desperate looking

in its stamped down

every day exhausting of souls

and spirits

whose skin was a little

darker than most

he rattled the sword of unfairness

and forced anyone with eyes

to really see

a man is a man

and his educated mind

is his only real freedom

from all the evil and darkness

he is forced to live under

he brought light and hope

to the legions forced to

stand at the rear

in the streets of America

courtesy of his home in

Harlem

but most of all

looking back

he was man for everyone

an educated describer then

of many  forbidden themes

the timeless tale and woeful wish

of one day having

true equality bequeathed

to those in his day

so brutally denied

America today is a better place

for sharing with the world

one of her many great sons

'A Tall Dark Elm' of a man

he was

the likes of Mr.Langston Hughes
