ENTERTAINING PRESUMPTION

JOURNAL #27

with unguarded gaze
upon the interactions of the day
the meaningless prattle was permitted
to over shadow the substance
as the firmest prodders thrashed through
the ivy
with their poison lipped sickles of polite
parlor chatter
so often their deliberate conversations thinly
veiled in self congratulation and vague sneering
amusement
unfashionable courage it had to take to reveal one's
true mind
as public censure reeked strong
upon the opinion of even the senior most members
holding propriety and appearance
ever steadfastly in the highest imaginable esteem
while simple truth is labeled vulgar in its expression
almost enviable
it must be
that graceful air of remoteness
tailored so elegantly to fit
no matter how unnaturally
such cloak feels upon the torso
of youth's promise , agility and vigor
a stiff , stale coat existence
page after page
scaring the very breath
from my own unsophisticated opinions
and contemplation
Victorian society and scope
though quite enchanting and lovely in
literature, art and theory
must have been pure strangling hell to live
foster and move among with dignity
and graceful aplomb.............

Author's Notes/Comments:

inspired by a book I read which was a loose sequel supposedly to the Jane Austen novel 'Pride And Prejudice.' it was a pretty good sequel that consisted of after Mr. Darcy Married Elizabeth and Georgina grew up and her subsequent courtship and marriage. It was a nice little book written in the same vain as Jane Austen would have. The book I read was titled, 'Presumption.'
