Midday at the Café

I remember the way sunlight chose

to trail the delicate black locks

that hung over your face so gracefully

Light and airy, greenery swaying below the ceilings, the setting matched your demeanour

Serene, calm and collected

You spoke about stoicism

And how you want to live by

what Aurelius had said

Pain will pass and everything will be okay

That’s how we grow, that’s how we change

The ward is a difficult place

I cannot know what that is like

A slight smile on your face

Please let me endure your pain, we’re the very same

You’re a ray of sunshine in a scene of decay

And the days go by, stagnant as I

ruminate, if you’re okay

If you’re safe

I told you there’s nothing I regret in life

I didn’t tell you the exception

That showing up late that day was my biggest lesson
