I Thought He Wanted a Mustang

He said that he was ready for a sharper, faster ride.

He said he wanted me to have the best as his new bride.

He thought that "silver" was the one that looked much richer there.

He hoped I'd feel as comfortable with a five-speed we would share.

He talked of zipping down the road at speeds that made me cringe.

He ranted on about that car as if he'd come unhinged.

I still don't know what happened, but I simply mentioned it...

I've always wanted my own truck.  I didn't plead one bit.

But somehow all that planning for the Mustang went downhill.

Cause tonight a brand new pickup has my small carport filled.

Standard cab and eight foot bed, with bed-liner too, of course.

This redneck's sitting high to ride and no longer as recourse

Must I infringe upon my sons to haul my yardsale finds.

I have a truck, a lovely truck, and it is mine all mine.

I think we both are quite surprised to find it sitting there.

I thought to buy a Mustang.  He wanted it--no care.

He thought to make ME happy.  We both are silly nuts.

But we really love each other, no ifs, no ands, no buts.

He laughed to hear my preference and I gasped to think he'd change.

He dickered for my pickup truck instead of his Mustang.

I love it! What a fun poem (even without knowing the story behind it). I, too, always wanted a pickup truck so bought one a few years ago. I now have a smaller, more economical, one, but hope to get another in the fall. Love it! The truck, you and Jim - what a story!

A capturing and subtly
explicatory ballad from
a lady and poet who uses
the simple ideals of
everyday life to inspire
that deepest humaneness
in the humanity we all
are endowed with!

With laughter and embracing
love the lines of this piece
explicates the meaning of
oneness and uplifting
togetherness with all of
its radiant beauty and
suprises!

You thought he wanted a Mustang,
he knew you wanted a truck
but the best in this whole deal
was to have found the perfect man
and that was just your good luck!
