Your Voice

My eyes still itched with sleep

When the phone jingled from the other room.

I rushed to snatch it up.

Surely such an early call meant only doom.

"Good morning, My Sweetheart,"

You growled through the many miles of lines.

"Just want to say I love you,

And I hope your day turns out really fine."

Ahh, God, How dear you are!

You read me like an open manuscript.

Reaching out to touch me,

Creating sweetness where bitterness crept.

My heart beats calm, content

To be caressed  by such love as you show.

The mantle of it clings,

Pumping warmth to a heart  cold as  snow.

Your love revives, renews

Where faltering I lived in deep despair.

Sunlight reaches my gloom,

And dispels it  by knowing you care.

Those unexpected phone calls are the very best! Especially if it is from someone you love and they are calling from another time zone.
