Only Momma

When I was small, she held my hand,

She made me know, to comprehend,

That I'd be loved until the end.

And who was that?  Only Momma

She taught me how to hold my spoon,

To wish on stars, to sing in tune,

To look for Jesus--He's coming soon.

And who was that?  Only Momma

The soft cocoon, the firefly's glow,

Her sweet caress made sure I know,

"We're all God's children."  She told me so.

And who was that?  Only Momma

There is no soul on earth I see

Who gives the wisdom she gives me

For life's great questions--on her knees.

And who is that?  My Momma

Author's Notes/Comments:

Momma is the finest Christian lady I've ever met.  Once about 6 years ago I called her to tell her I was on my way to see her (and Daddy).  She said that she was going to the Curb Market but she would be back in plenty of time.  When I got there she met me practically at the door and said, "Let's go to the Curb Market."  I said, "I thought you..."  She shushed me and pointed to the door.  After all SHE IS STILL MOMMA.  When we started up the road out of Daddy's hearing, I looked over at her and said, "OK, what's going on?"  I will never forget what Momma said to me.  She said, "This morning I went to the Curb Market and bought some onions.  When I picked the bag up one had fallen out and I just stuck it in my pocket.  When I got home and started putting the produce up, there wasn't a hole in the onion bag, so that's not my onion.  I took it by mistake but it will still be stealing if I don't take it back to them."  I didn't answer because tears were choking me.  I simply drove her there and waited until she came back and got into the car.  She looked at me and smiled.  "Whew," she said.  "I'll sleep tonight now."  I thank God Almighty for Momma, and if some of the children I teach had mothers like mine, they would KNOW how to behave.

My wife did the same thing basicly while we were in Germany. When she got home from grocery shopping, she checked what she had bought against the reciept to make sure she hadn't been double charged only to find one can that wasn't on the reciept. She immediately went back to pay for it. The workers in the store were shocked. They told her no one had ever done that before. It was a great lesson in honesty for our children. We need more Mothers like that.

Oh, Jess, this is so beautiful! You brought tears to my eyes. "If only we had listened ... if only they would listen." If only we could all hear our Mother's plea!
Deeply touching and so tastefully written.
