All We Ever Wanted

Folder:
2009 Poems

Why is it that we all want to be the same?

Constantly trying to fit in,

Constantly looking to stand out.

Why are we a people of contradiction?

We are people on a mission to blend together.

You may think it’s an attempt to stand out,

But we all shop at the same stores,

We all look to the latest styles.

Constantly preaching individuality,

Constantly shunning those who are different.

What a radical thought,

Those who actually stand out,

They don't get too far.

It's only those who think they are different,

That ever seem to make it anywhere.

We have a President who ran on a platform of change.

But nothings different.

It’s still the same country,

With the same problems,

And the same tired solutions.

Well then why's it so,

That all we ever wanted,

Is to be the same.

Yet no matter how hard we try,

When we a stripped to the flesh,

None of us are the same.

We all have our differences,

The parts of us that make us unique.

We hide these under designer labels,

Designer makeup.

Trying so hard to turn ourselves into something we were never meant to be.

We don't want to be caught naked.

Because then everyone would see we aren't the same after all.

Why's it that all we ever wanted,

Is to just be like everyone else?
