An Essay About Gay Rights

Sometimes when I’m bored I decide to kill the time by surfing the internet. Not in the usual sense, but rather looking though many Christian and Conservative group sites and seeing why they hate gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people so much. What makes us so different, why don’t we deserve equality. Why when they talk about us is it our agenda, or our views being oppressed on mainstream America. Why are we hated so much, by such a large minority? Well the most common answer you will receive is that it’s morally wrong and a sin.

However I feel there is a fundamental problem with a statement of that nature, who is to say that I have to conform to your standards or your ideas of morality? Because three major religions agree doesn’t’ mean anything. Just because you can agree that homosexuality is wrong doesn’t mean you agree on anything else. However you only use this because you all do agree on this one point. Its rather selective and a very interesting “Christian” agenda. But what’s that you say? Oh if we don’t believe in your morals then whose to say that molesting children or killing people should be right either? It’s hard to say. I grew up without a religion; I grew up with the basic understanding of good and bad. I grew up knowing that killing is bad, that doing things against peoples will is wrong. Therefore in that example, molesting children is wrong because the child either doesn’t have the capacity to not understand its wrong, or is being forced into it. However what’s to say that if a child is brought up in a household where it’s tough to be right that it’s wrong? It’s an interesting thought, but fundamentally it’s the same difference all around. Thus if a child is brought up in a house where Homosexuality is wrong whose to tell him that he needs to change his views.

This is where it becomes a question of this homosexual agenda, and such a fine line and difficult place to determine. The majority of people grow up learning to love other humans and that god loves them. However here is all I think needs to be said. Being gay, just knowing doesn’t hurt anyone. It isn’t affecting a child who is too young to understand, it isn’t killing, and it isn’t harming animals that can’t fight. It just is. It’s a thing, and if we chose to date or have a relationship physical or whatever it is consenting between to people who feel the same way. No one is harmed, no one forced. It’s wanted by two parties. If you bring up a child again, if it is a child of sufficiently young age who claims to “want” it, it is evident he is too young to understand those implications, thus it would have an adverse effect on the child’s decision and thus would not work in the terms I laid out as it really isn’t consensual cause the child doesn’t have full understanding of the repercussions. Therefore in this sense homosexuality doesn’t harm anyone, doesn't kill, doesn’t effect those to young and isn’t against some thing that couldn’t say no. Therefore back to the religion argument, without religion I am able to set up standards that don’t need to be based of religion where everything besides the homosexuality would be acceptable.

That brings us back to the fundamental point, being gay. Still against gods will? What if I don’t believe in god? Who’s to say that your belief in something that may or may not exist should affect me? And if god loves his children that means that no matter what he loves us. Just like a murderer’s parent will still love their child, even if they don’t agree, there is love, a basic fundamental link and understanding. But god is an abstract thought, and that should not be the soul argument for a fight because religion doesn’t affect everyone. And in a country free from religion in government there must be better arguments to stop homosexuality, otherwise we would be free.

So what are the other arguments, that there is no proof its natural? That because no genetic link is found, that it’s all in your head, it’s wrong? This still stems from the religion argument, which is what makes it wrong. Do people who have ADD deserve second class lives? No? They should be treated? What if they don’t want to? Then what? Are you going to force them? They don’t harm society? How do gays harm society? It’s a valid question. AIDS is not a valid answer, anyone can get diseases and that is not fair as justification against the gay culture only. Nor is religion from the first argument. So how do we harm the public? I don’t believe there is an answer to that question because we really don’t harm society. Therefore even if it’s a choice and not genetic, who’s to say it’s wrong. Pepsi or Coke, gay or straight there is no difference. If it’s what we want, that makes us happy who are you to tell us to live our life in pain and sadness?

For those who could move beyond the confines of their religion and see this point would and should try to realize that with general morality, homosexuality is not wrong. It’s not dangerous. And whether it’s a choice or natural (I prefer the latter) it doesn’t make it right or wrong. People are allowed to choose what they enjoy, so long as it doesn’t violate those initial moral concepts that work on a simple un-secular level. So the next question is rights.

If we have proven to the majority that in the end there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, beyond the fact it’s a minority of the public means we should still receive equal rights. Religion is out, morality is disproved in this case, and therefore what’s to not give us the same rights. Its no different then race. You didn’t choose race you say? We’ll look at it as ideology, Democrats and Republicans have the same rights, yet they have opposing views. You aren’t born one, but you chose and still have the same rights. This is a different way to think, and therefore is comparable. Thus weather chosen or natural rights should be equal. We should be protected from being hurt because of who we are, though any humans should have that. We should be allowed to work and do what we chose without discrimination. We should be able to have all the rights of any other person of our country, without any limits what-so-ever. We are humans and that is fundamental. The issue of marriage and adoption is one to be discussed more in depth.

Since we have said that rights are the same, and that weather learned or natural it still ahs the same standing, and that without religion in the argument, general morals can be upheld without putting homosexuality on the list, that we have the same standing in an average eye as the next straight person. However marriage is a complicated question. Churches and religions should not be forced to hold gay marriages. It’s the churches choice and not our say to force that on them. However the government should give legal recognition equivalent and call it marriage and nothing else. In the eyes of the government we have to have the same right, and same titles, however churches need not be involved in the process. Adoption is the one point that is skewed depending upon beliefs. One who believes homosexuality is a learned trait has every right to be against this because you are forcing a child with no general knowledge to know, or ability to fully understand into a homosexual setting that will have a major affect on them. Therefore in that context of ideals it may perhaps be legal that they not be allowed to adopt young children. However if it is in fact genetic, and natural, then whose to say that a homosexual household will change anything. The child will grow up to be whatever he is meant to be, and as long as he is in a house of love, weather two fathers or mothers, there are no grounds to say it should not be allowed.

Therefore to my beliefs here is what I think I have proven, to myself, and hopefully to those that are likeminded. Whether homosexuality is a choice or learned, we deserve the same rights up to being married. (Adoption is a debate I’m to bias to fight on.) Also I believe that general morals upheld by religion are upheld by a scholarly un-religious approach that dose not focus on homosexuality as being wrong simple because a book says so. Therefore we are no different then the next human and deserve the same. But I want to return to my initial talk about the homosexual agenda and such.

I personally don’t agree with everything, books should not be written to show only pro-GLBT views or anything of the sort. As with any text in any public school both sides of an argument should be shown and allow the student to make their own informed decision based on what their where raised as. However even if they don’t agree that is a persons right, and everyone is entitled to that. Perhaps god is right; perhaps we are all going to hell. If a child believes that, or adult, or anyone their ideals should not be changed. However they should learn to be respectful of all. If a child is brought up hating blacks, because it’s “wrong” what would religious conservatives say to that? Would that be “right” too? I don’t believe so. People can have that opinion with themselves, friends, but they should not force that opinion on those who don’t support it, and especially on blacks, or in general GLBT people. Also it should not be “forced” down peoples throats. No one should be forced to actively support gay rights, or agree, but people can’t discriminate for it either. People don’t have to fight for blacks and their rights, but it’s generally agreed that no one should be discriminated for it. Much is the same for democrat or republican, no one has to support either, or both or whatever, but they should not be discriminated for that. Therefore the gay rights movement shouldn’t force people to change, but help them understand that while they don’t have to agree, they can’t deny the basic principals of this country to people as deserving as everyone else.

I understand where the GLBT movement and activism comes form, but there are points I can not agree with, just trying to make it seem like a lifestyle that can only be viewed through rose colored glasses is not fair. An objective view that shows both sides is accurate. People should make decisions on their own, but realize that we are humans who deserve the same right. In the end I realize I’m gay and will have to grow up dealing with that, the good and the bad. The embedded hate, the overt need to be paraded though streets by activists. Both I loath, but both are required in a nation of freedom. And this is where I’m going to chose to end. We are a nation of freedom, and as I proved, there is nothing wrong with homosexuality besides peoples views on it, therefore in the land of the free, we should be free from their constrained views and allowed to live as we chose. Freely, and happily without being harmed, denied or as sub citizens. But the current socio/political climate brings new meaning to the last few words of our national anthem, “O say, does that Star - Spangled Banner yet wave; O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

I’m not sure if this all made sense, but I would appreciate feedback on this and your thoughts or questions or whatever! I just felt I needed to write, not only to see people’s reactions but to work though my own thoughts and issues. Again would love feedback and thanks for reading.

Powerful piece, I agree with you live and let live freely. thught not gay myself I have many gay friends. The ignorant do not realize the empowered love we are all capable of feeling, giving, and receiving if only we have an open mind and heart. As a matter of fact tonight I had gone to a pot luck dinner at my towns historical society which I am a member of and ran into a friend named Ed who is gay and he hugged me. Many women friends said to me he has a thing for you,I said no he is my friend and we understand and respect one another. Ed's a photographer. The woman were gushing like teenagers which was funny to me. Yes,Ed is good looking with boyish charm, silky hair and big brown eyes, but more so he is an individual with a lot of heart. When I told a few he was gay the typical attitude of oh what a waste. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is no waste,he loves and is loved..yeah if people could get over their egos and ignorance there would be peace all the way around. Im glad you wrote this piece.......
