The Innocence of Children – The Cynicism of Life

Why is it that when we are first born

We grip on so tightly to fingers?

Maybe we come into this world knowing life is full of loss.

Why is it then that as we grow up

We stop gripping so hard?

Maybe it is now that we learn that gripping onto something does not mean a loss will not occur;

Nor will gripping on ease the pain of the loss

Maybe we learn that loss, in this life, is inevitable.

Maybe we learn things are more enjoyable when we just revel in the happiness they bring,

And not restrict them by gripping on so tight

Maybe I’ve just become cynical.

Maybe I’ve just lived.
