Paint the Sky Red

Folder:
Poems 2005

Perhaps this is the best idea I've ever had:
to paint the sky red with watercolors
so the rain may wash the paint

to the ground
where the blue of the grass
(that having been changed, too)
could melt,
blur,
with the pink from the bottom of the sky
(or waterlogged red
if that is what you'd rather call it)
to make a lavender sunrise
that will bathe our silhouettes
and throw shadows across the ground
(because ebony makes such a nice contrast)
as we smile.

     "They can't find us here,"
we whisper.
For all those who snicker "conform" in our ears
and wave pitchforks in our honor,
the colors would burn their retinas
after the muted grays they have been living in for so many years.
