Beyond The Ramparts

I look beyond the ramparts

Of the fortress on the hill

To the valleys spread before me

Where in lies the will

And dreams of every shape and form

Of everyone until

They are dashed and slashed upon

By those who strive to kill

All beyond the ramparts

Of the fortress on the hill

"Tis safe within the ramparts

Of the fortress on the rise

But 'tis within the valley there

That the promise lies.

Within the sleeping dragon

Who's teardrops fill the eyes

And within who's heart does beat

The desire to have the prize

Safe within the ramparts

Of the fortress on the rise.

I move about the ramparts

Of the fortress standing strong

As I listen to the valleys' hymn

But I do not know their song.

I can sense reverberation

And the power in the throng

For as with lightening from the clouds

I can be struck with its prong

As I move about the ramparts

Of the fortress standing strong

Out beyond the ramparts

Is the fortress cold and gray

As are the hearts I find there in

Engaged within their play?

Or perhaps it's like the air that hangs

On a leafless winter's day.

At any rate I long to turn

And find the truth today

Out beyond the ramparts

From the fortress cold and gray.

Such truth! I find myself hanging on to things that don't fulfill and nurture (afraid of the unknown perhaps?), and unwilling to follow yearnings because change is a mystery... Maybe we all need to reach out more. This one makes a person think!
