I've Known Love

Folder:
Dedications

I'm known love
that some will never experience.

When my grandmother
with dementia that
gets worse every day
still somehow remembers who I am.

The memories flood in
behind her eyes
as I hug her tight.

In that moment
I wish I could turn back the clock
and bring back what was stolen
by such a horrible disease.

I've known love
in these bittersweet times
and in the happiest as well.

When my nephew
who I've watched grow up
first calls me by name
and kisses my cheek.

He may not be my child,
but I would do anything
to see that boy smile.

I cherish the moments
we have together
even when I have to change diapers
or give him a bath.

I wouldn't trade these precious memories
for all the riches in the world
because I've known love
and that's made it worth it all.
