Misinterpreting Love

Watching couples holding hands
as I walk around town
reminds me of how crippling
loneliness can be.

It's easier to look down
at the pavement
then stare into lovestruck eyes.

I was there once or twice;
I remember the butterflies,
the starry glances.

So many close calls to love
but in the end
the feelings weren't there
even when the words were uttered.

Infatuation or desperation
can look at like love
and yet be so far from it.
