Finding my Voice

Folder:
Personal (Hope)

How do you express
the backlash of apathy?

After spending so many years
ridiculed and hushed,
how do you overcome the silence?

I try to raise my voice
but my tongue is unpredictable.

The dialogue
of a wounded heart
can prove dangerous,
burning the throat.

So I keep it inside
where the shadow always wins
and nothing can grow.

But my thoughts freeze over
when they don't see the light,
engulfed in melancholy.

Nothing hurts as much
as when I swallow
the shards of ice.

Better to let the words
settle on my lips
long enough to melt
instead of hardening my heart.
