Rise from the Ashes

[I am burned out.]

My fire has been smothered

under the weight of worry,

by the breeze of heartbreak.

Fanning the flame of my desire

only spurred addictions while

inside I was turned off.

I added fuel to the fire

when it should have been

extinguished.

[I was about to go up in smoke.]

Rather than incinerating insecurity

through romance’s tiny spark,

my behavior burned me alive.

My flesh was left charred,

my heart blackened throughout.

[I became dust.]

When I had crashed and burned,

my hero brought me out

from the pile of cinders.

He wiped away the soot

and the tears from my eyes.

[He said I was reborn.]

What emerged from the ashes

was something more impressive

than what was reduced to coal...

an inferno of reverent passion,

the ignition of blazing love,

a fire that will never go out.

Rewrite 2012

[I am burned out.]

My fire has been smothered
under the weight of worry,
by the breeze of heartbreak.

Fanning the flame of my desire
only spurred addictions while
inside I was turned off.

I added fuel to the fire
when it should have been
extinguished.

[I was about to go up in smoke.]

Rather than incinerating insecurity
through romance’s tiny spark,
my behavior burned me alive.

My flesh was left charred,
my heart blackened throughout.

[I became dust.]

When I had crashed and burned,
my hero brought me out
from the pile of cinders.

He wiped away the soot
and the tears from my eyes.

[He said I was reborn.]

What emerged from the ashes
was something more refined
than what was reduced to coal...

an inferno of reverent passion,
the ignition of blazing love,
a fire that will never go out.
