My Mom's Books

My mom’s books, her most valuable possession, can be found scattered all around our house. She has one in the kitchen, one in the living room, a couple sitting in the TV room, and about three in my parents’ room. There’s no way that you visit our house without stumbling upon one of these. People who know my mom know there’s no better gift for her than a book; and the thrill she gets when she opens it for the very first time is even bigger than the thrill she gets when she eats a piece of her favorite chocolate cake. Surprisingly, she reads several books at the same time even though their themes vary from metaphysics and psychology, to politics, to spiritualism. Every Sunday, as soon as I wake up and go upstairs, I know she’ll be there in her pajamas, sitting by the window, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, and reading the last chapters of one of her books. Sometimes, when the book really grips her, she even stays up past midnight to finish her reading. She has this curiosity that almost burns inside of her and, one after another, she reads about 5 books per week, but I can tell that she is always hungry for more; more knowledge, more learning, more reading. Throughout the years, she has built her private library in a small corner of my parents’ room, which stores her very own diverse collection; but space never appears to be enough when it comes down to her books. My mom truly believes that reading is the best form of therapy, and I can see, by the way she gets immersed in a book, that she has indeed become her own therapist. Every book she reads allows her to explore and discover herself and the world around her. Time seems to stop for my mom when she has her nose in a book and nothing can distract her, not music, not the TV, not even me talking to her. She is not afraid to fully experience a book and let herself cry or meditate while reading it and this has led her to become a self-taught person who puts into practice the information she acquires. I believe that the amount of introspection she has gone through with every single one of her books can be seen by the state of mindfulness she has achieved.
