While You Were Gone

I've changed a lot while you were gone

I've learned so much

But while I've gained so much

I've also lost a little too

I've learned that life can be cruel

But kind at the same time

That good guys don't always win

And heroes come in the form of the most ordinary

I've learned that there's a million ways

Of getting your heart bruised

But know that risking it getting bruised again

Is worth it with the right people

I've learned that trust, love, and happiness

Are things earned and experienced

Never taken, never forced

They always take more than a lifetime to find

I've learned to not fear mistakes

For without them I would lack learning

Although with them I now bear scars

That would still remain after I heal

Gone are all my old ideals

Replaced by new and better views

Gone also is some of my innocence

But fear not, part of it I still keep

And now you're back and you say

I haven't changed a bit

While I look the same on the outside

I am now a different person on the inside

A lot has changed

A lot has passed

Time has certainly made it's point

While you were gone...

Author's Notes/Comments:

It's a poem inspired by how some friends I haven't seen in years commented how much I've changed as a person.
