Recurrence

I've been here before, done this before

And now I'm just seeing that which I once saw

For the third time? The second? The millionth? Don't know

But I've done what I'm doing, I've gone where I go

And yet of this fact I am now aware

And remember last time I was more over there

When I lay down by the lake I dipped in my toe

Yet omitted that this time, I'm quite sure, I know

If little differences can happen, then why not big ones, too?

Could I alter the road, steer the ship somewhere new?

I probably can't change it, perhaps I'll know when I die

But still one can wonder and it can't hurt to try
