The Scent Of Freedom

Breathe deep and smell the essence freedom’s wrought,

inhale the fragrance, far too oft’ presumed,

for ne’er have we been forced to stifle thought,

nor waive life’s dignities; each right’s assumed.

We hold the future’s key within our hand,

bequeathed in trust, with precious blood and tears,

by those who died in battle’s noble stand,

to quell a mother’s cry and child’s fears.

Though tyranny and terror surely reign,

in reaches oft’ deferred by learned minds,

the despot mocks the scholar with disdain,

disguised beneath the mask of humankind.

Breathe deep, the fragrant smell of God’s intent,

‘tis mankind’s birthright, freedom’s righteous scent.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Writted during "Iraqi Freedom".  Freedom is not just a Western right, but the birthright of mankind.  Why would any scholar not want the Iraqi people freed?

Ken: St. Thomas Aquinas is speaking here
Of course in his dry theological argumentation, he could not have achieved what you do with your brilliant poetic skill. But St. Thomas' mind is speaking through your words.

God is the bestower and primal source of all freedom.
You bring it so marvellously to expression What a magnificent gift you have been given!

A rare treat to see that highest theological insight going hand in hand with excellent poetry, complementing each other.
Thank you for pointing out to me that this work exists- attainable.
