AN EXCEPTIONAL CHRISTMAS CAROL

I think if we stopped to analyze each other…in no time we would see

In one form or another…we all have some kind of disability.

Some may be minor…some invisible…some may never need addressed

others are more noticeable…more apparent than the rest.

Some people focus on the negative prefix of the term dis-ability…

While others hurdle the negative concentrating on the word ability.

Last night I saw a production of A Christmas Carol performed by a theater group…

on a church stage filled with capable actors…

Theatre Exceptional is the name of the troupe.

I think a church was the perfect setting…

because during the play when bells were ringing

every now and then…when I closed my eyes…

I believe I heard angels singing.

As I watched the actors on the stage…deliver their lines and sing and shout

I noticed how they helped each other when they needed it…

and I thought…this is what acting is all about.

It’s about expressing yourself, it’s about having fun,

it’s about working together…like a family…

It’s about doing something proudly…to the best of your ability.

And when the play was over…as the audience stood up to shout

I realized it’s not only acting…but what life is all about.

Perhaps that’s what Theatre Exceptional is trying to teach us…

That even when life doesn’t go as we plan…

not to concentrate on the things we can’t do…

but to rejoice in the things we can.

To dance in the midst of our struggles…to sing out in the rain

To find a way not to lose our happiness whenever we experience pain.

To do as Mr. Scrooge was shown…when we’re walking down the street…

To find what is exceptional…

in everyone we meet
