More About Me

What I want you to know about me...

I have an intense passion for the spoken word. My poems lack rhyme and rhythm and are made up of extended metaphors laid out more like a conversation. My poems are meant to be performed, not written, but I hope you enjoy them all the same. My poems are anything but trite, so if that's a turn-off, you have been warned. It takes much time for me to truly finish a poem. For I'm a firm believer that a poem is rarely, if ever, finished, and only abandoned...
.
If you've never taken the time to YouTube great spoken word artists, give Taylor Mali (e.g. "What Teachers Make", "The The Impotence of Proofreading", "On Girls Lending Pens"), Phil Kaye (e.g. "Repetition", "Teeth"), and Sarah Kay (e.g. "B", "Worst Poetry", "Hiroshima") a listen.

About My Navel

It needs a tan. And yet, when I wear a tight, too short t-shirt, and lift my arms up over my head in an attempt to relax peacefully on the couch, his tongue always seems to gravitate towards it...

Favorite Stuff (poets, poems, quotes, hobbies, etc.)

"My knees still buckle every time I get on a stage, my self-confidence can be measured out in teaspoons, mixed into my poetry and it still always tastes funny in my mouth. But in Hiroshima, some people were wiped clean away, leaving only a wristwatch or a diary page, so no matter that I have inhibitions to fill all my pockets, I keep trying... hoping that one day I'll write I poem I can be proud to let sit in a museum exhibit as the only proof I existed."
- Sarah Kay, from "Hiroshima"
.
"When I was young, I was taught that the trick to dominating language was breaking it down, convincing it that it was worthless... I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you... See? Nothing..."
- Phil Kaye, from "Repetition"
