You Live in Kansas

(Dedicated to Keli Martinson)

You were thirteen, timid, and so shy
like a young rose afraid to blossom
but I never understood why
becuase it'd just be so awesome
If with problems, you wouldn't cry
With troubled lines, you'd cross 'em
With struggles, you'd still try
and with doubts, you'd toss 'em
Your soul was trapped by afflictions
Held back by convictions
Buried under rescrictions
and drowned in contradictions
That's when you and I first met
and everything changed for good
A guy from Georgia on the net
learning all that he could
coming as close as he could get
knowing that any closer and it would
be too far for any regret
and this he understood
There'd be no room for lies
and definately no playing around
if I wanted to get past your cries
so that your soul could be found
There'd be lots of compromise
I'd be standing on the ground
steadily reaching for the skies
as crazy as that sounds
but I didn't care
I just wanted to be there
so that you could share
the feelings that you bear
It was somewhere around a year
before you blossomed and began glowing
and everything became so clear
and without even knowing
we started wanting to be near
and feelings were already growing
Neither of us had any fear
and weren't afraid of showing
We knew what we felt was right
There wasn't anything anyone could say
We just didn't know that it might
require such a heavy price to pay
and be a rough and tough fight
that would take forever and a day
to have our dream come to light
becuase we lived four states away.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem was long overdue. I've known Keli for 6 years and she's deserved one for years.
