And She Called Me 'Miss'

Just because I don’t have it yet,

The shining diploma of a reformist

Just because I don’t speak yet,

In a forum full of social analysts

Does not mean I am nobody…

Nor you can just call me ‘miss’.

Equal rights and opportunity

You great people ‘up there’ talk about

How come vigilance and sensitivity

In the classroom you fail to shout?

And you called me ‘miss’ just because

I have no title as yours, miss?

Well hear ye! Hear ye!

This ‘miss’ has a name.

May not be big, but just the same-

A name you will talk about someday

With pride and without a shame.

And if you don’t know it yet,

Soon you will see-

That this ‘miss’ you once called

Will be smiling in glee.

Not because of titles or recognition

They don’t matter- too low for me.

But because I have not become like you-

Seems so jaded and unfree.

‘Practice what you teach’

‘Do whatever you preach’

I have learned so much from you.

The ‘what-not-to-do’.

YES! This ‘miss’ has a mind.

Learning, Working and Sharing.

No titles as yours could ever intimidate

Stop, reject or discriminate.

YES! This ‘miss’ has a heart.

Beating, Feeling and Emphatizing.

No people like you could understand-

Look beyond what your eyes can see.

YES! This ‘miss’ has a soul.

Searching, Longing, Loving

No one could never know who, how or why…

Let God alone be my judge.

And YES! This ‘miss’ has a dream.

Beautiful, Better, Real.

No people like you would believe-

WATCH OUT! Open your heart to possibilities.

You challenged a sensitive part of my ego,

One moment I will not easily forego.

And so I thank you for calling me ‘miss’.

But THE NAME is Ms. Jerraleen Balais.
