At Corinth

Those girls in Corinth do not bow
to our lust.  They are Christians now.
They do not cater our desire,
no matter what the offered hire.
As if the world is rearranged,
the girls in Corinth have been changed.

The girls in Corinth follow Christ---
some god's son, who was sacrificed
upon a cross to pay for sin.
His followers are "born again"
(whatever that is) in the name
the girls of Corinth now proclaim.

The girls of Corinth have new joys
beyond the reach of sailor-boys:
not how we want them, in obscene
inversions brought from Mitylene.
And where they once took us to play,
the girls of Corinth now go pray.

The girls of Corinth speak of Paul,
that Jew from Tarsus, who brought all
this here.  They speak of his renown,
and how he has transformed this town
with converts (may they all be cursed!)---
the girls of Corinth were the first.

The girls of Corinth?---street-wise trash---
strike us with their religion's lash.
And when the novelty has passed
(this so-called "faith" will never last);
when their new life grows thin and slack,
our girls of Corinth will crawl back.

Starward

How wrong the sailors were. History has proven that it has lasted and in some ways, grown stronger. Well written poem. I will read more of yours later.
