At Ephesus, 3

[on Ephesians 2:10]

The Senator's new house---vines in full flower
around a marble fountain; in the hour
when dawn dismisses night's last constellation,
his home is witness to a conversation
of happy fellowship, wholly unfurled
and safely sheltered from the brutal world
outside.  Reformed thief, tired centurion,
poet, barefoot girl, and Senator share one
accord of joy:  and that proves them to be
alive in Christ.  Herein, unfailingly,
is love with faith that filled the early church;
and peace among these brethren without smirch.
Their lives in Christ become His poetry
with which He writes the new reality.
