+ 2ND POEMS: Marius Loves Mariah, 2

I like the way we live, the heartfelt talks

we share intensely on our evenings' walks

that you enjoy, barefoot.  I like to hold

you close upon this hill, our makeshift seat

for watching stars drift.  As your grass-stained feet

(that know how to avoid stone trauma) meet

and tease mine (that are still shod in those old

costly sandals that Rome manufactures), I

am staggered by the sheer reality

of you.  Not even epic poetry

(despite what scowling scholars might reply)

can adequately trace---in any measure---

the overwhelmingly abundant pleasure

and blessing brought forth by your company.

Better than songs remembered from sweet dreams,

your words---in softest, Aramaic drawl---

sink deep into my spirit to enthrall.

You whisper, and it gathers into verses.

In your eyes' gaze I find bright, starlike gleams.

Somehow, even your shyest smile disperses

all cares and my most troubling memory.

You bring with you the best of Gaililee---

your Gospel faith and utter, awesome beauty

(no skeptic unbeliever can refute me).

Never before have I been this near to

such love, and joy, and truth as dwell in you.

Who needs some dominus' craven conceit?---

more preferable is kissing your bare feet.

Who wants to lose a precious life to death?---

as it draws closer with each exhaled breath.

The sum of such existence is engraved

upon a slab; past that, none can be saved,

and hell becomes the lonesome destiny.

But we know Whom we have believed, and He

keeps that which we, in faith, commit to Him

forever.  Neither fear, nor wish, nor whim

can wrest that from Him.  In His Kingdom, hence,

marriage will not be needed as the fence

that keeps sin out or, otherwise, temptation.

But licit lovers, who have loved Salvation,

will love each other, there, eternally

in endless fellowship and conversation.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I ask the reader's indulgence for the pun in the 27th line:  I find little difference in the Roman concept of the 'dominus' and the present day's perverse concept of the 'dominant' (and they know who is meant here).

All I can say is that this poems speaks truth. Everything written there is what it means to find a true satisfying love in your partner and your God. Wonderful again, I keep finding it difficult to think of words to describe how much these poems strike me.
