When I Close My Eyes

The cool summer basement,

Where sunlight glazes the walls

And cute childish designs

On velvet paper craze the floor,

Where no longer a carpet resides,

But the lush emerald green of a wild lawn

Sprung with bright flowers and family pictures,

Upon thee of three walls,

In the midst of tinted, gold day,

A stairway appears, half-glass, half-rain,

And the autumn abound it

Draws the human mind,

As a moth to the flame-

Above these glorious stairs,

Lies a mediocre green-blue door

With silver knob and shining key,

The door opens to reveal

A clearly divided realm; dark and light,

The dark side is a shadow-cast lonely room,

Draped in mystery and the sadness of the after-dark

The light, is a yellow stain-glass sunshine church,

Bubbling with laughter and children’s voices,

Outside the window of the shrouded darkness,

Falls the fridged droplets of lonely ice,

Alone in their individuality,

Frozen in time, happiness eluding them,

Outside the brightly cherry-colored stained glass

Of the daylight shine of morning stardust,

There is the joy of rainbows with light spring showers

And light smiles warm faces as the sunlight warms the sky,

True, the happiness is small and quaint,

But loved truly through and through,

Even by the darkened winter ice-blue snowflakes,

Who wish for warmth and envy the hope that blossoms there,

Though they become their fate,

And welcome the shadows’ blissful company.

So yet now, still another stairwell appears,

Between the ying and yang, the a darkness and the day,

To the top and final floor of life I go.

The clapping hands of shrouded silhouettes are revealed

And so I rush to get away,

The crowd so thick, so full, I fear,

But soon I stand, my ears a flame,

Not wanting to look at those,

Within the shadowed groups,

Control is lost, burning cheeks,

Much to all of their dismay,

I run down three stairs, and away, abroad,

There is where I opened my eyes

Upon the rooftop of my house, my self,

The center of me, the brain, the heart;

Realizing for the first time,

When I closed my eyes, my soul was opened.
