English Minor's Early Epigram, 1

In college, in the staid mid-Seventies,

the English faculty was quite despotic:

all readings had to fit the Eliotic

judgment.  Odd were transformed to awkward evens.

The stars had not yet constellated Stevens.

Blank anonyms professed anomalies

that separated us from poetry's

delights.  Only impeding graduation

from liberal arts secured our liberation.
